The winners of the annual Taieri winter crop competition and charity auction will be announced on Friday.

Competition co-ordinator Drew Carruthers, of North Taieri, said the judges had scrutinised about 120 winter crops from 70 farms between Shannon, about 20km southwest of Middlemarch, and Clarendon, about 10km northeast of Milton.

The judges considered factors such as yield, consistency and cleanliness, relative to the environment.

All crops were weighed including kale on 200ha sheep, beef and cropping property Janefield Farm in Outram by weighmen Brian Young, Ross Roy, Ken Spittle and Colin Tod.

Kale, entered by Ian Bathgate and his son Simon, was the first crop they weighed last week.

"What a way to start the day," Mr Spittle said on arrival at the tall kale crop.

A prizegiving and auction will be held at Wingatui Racecourse on Friday night.

Recipients of proceeds from the competition include the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, Otago Community Hospice and Otago Rural Support Trust.

The competition is organised by the Taieri Lions Club and Taieri Rotary Club.
