A Catlins dairy stud reduction sale attracted strong demand across New Zealand.

Dairy farmers Tim and Katy Button, of Port Molyneux, auctioned more than 120 of their Anglo stud herd, a mix of cows, in-calf heifers and calves, mostly Holstein Friesian, either black and white or red, earlier this month.

Mrs Button said the sale was "mind-blowing", attracting buyers from across New Zealand.

"It was big."

The average cow price was more than $3800 including a top price of $8400 for cow Anglo Alcove Maddie VG86.

"She’s gone up to Temuka, to the family we bought her grandmother from in 2012."
