The series "Outstanding Outhouses" features images of striking structures in the rural South, including this former telephone exchange building near Roxburgh Dam in Central Otago.
A mushroom settlement, including more than 700 houses, was built on bare land in the 1950s to house more than 3000 people linked to the construction of New Zealand’s first major hydro-electric project.
The school in the community had 550 pupils and 16 staff in 1955.
