Support provided for farmers affected by snow storm

Farmers affected by snow or under stress are encouraged to contact the Rural Support Trust on 0800787-254, and they will be put in contact with either the Otago or Southland Rural Support Trust.

Southland Rural Support Trust chairwoman Cathie Cotter said it had been working with Rural Women New Zealand members who had prepared meals for farmers caught up in last week’s snow.

"Farmers do not have to be in dire need and all they need to do is get in touch if there is something we can help with," she said.

"We have not had a lot of people ringing that number wanting help.

"However, in terms of emergencies, we are just a phone call away."

Beef + Lamb New Zealand staff had contacted the sheep and beef farmers in the affected areas to see if they needed help and had been delivering meals to farmers and their families in West Otago last Wednesday and in Southland on Friday.

Support trust members met last week to discuss next steps forward with other stakeholders and to "have a chinwag about pressure points".
