One person had to be airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition after a crash on Dunedin's Southern Motorway on Wednesday evening.

The crash left traffic backed up on the motorway for most of the afternoon, after a car collided with the barrier between the Westland St on-ramp and the Old Brighton Rd off-ramp, a police spokesperson said.

The road was re-opened about 5.30pm, an NZTA spokesman said.

The crash was reported about 2.50pm and motorists were advised to expect delays while emergency services were at the scene.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and one rapid response unit responded.

Ambulance staff treated one person at the scene, before transporting them to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter.

A reporter at the scene said it appeared a vehicle towing a trailer had "jack-knifed" and hit the barrier of the motorway, damaging the barrier.

Emergency services towed the vehicle.
