Isaac Construction has been awarded the contract for the project, which forms part of the northernmost section of Te Ara O-Rakipaoa Nor'West Arc cycleway. The works is anticipated to start on the site in late May.
The project will cover all of Matsons Ave and Chapel St, along with a small section of Harewood Rd between Harris Cres and the railway crossing.
The work is expected be finished by December and are part of the wider Northwest programme of water and roading upgrades, which got underway in January this year.
Water and roading infrastructure in multiple locations across the northwest are being upgraded to ensure they can service the needs of a growing city.
City council head of transport Stephen Wright said the three waters and transport teams are working together to deliver a coordinated programme of works to reduce disruption, keep traffic flowing and get out of the way as quickly as possible.
“The separated cycleway being installed in Matsons Avenue, and on the north side of Harewood Rd, will help make travel safer and more user friendly for everyone.
“We’re taking the opportunity to upgrade the wastewater pipes at the same time, to reduce the overall duration of construction in the area and the impact on residents and businesses,” says Council Head of Transport Stephen Wright.
A drop-in information session where residents can find out more about the project and likely impacts will be held at the Chapel Street Centre at 10am on Saturday, May 16.
Te Ara O-Rakipaoa Nor'West Arc cycleway will connect cyclists from Cashmere to Papanui, via Spreydon, Middleton, Riccarton and Ilam, once complete. It’s anticipated the entire route will be finished by the end of 2027.
