There are 222 new community cases of Covid-19 in Canterbury today.
Nationally health officials reported 2066 new cases, two Covid-related deaths and 286 people in hospital with the virus, including three in intensive care, 36 in Canterbury hospitals and six in South Canterbury hospitals.
Thirty-one new cases were reported in South Canterbury today.
The two Covid-related deaths announced today were both people in their 70s, one of whom was from the Auckland region and the other from Nelson Marlborough. Both were women.
A total of 1908 deaths have now been confirmed as attributable to Covid-19, either as the underlying cause of death or as a contributing factor. The seven-day rolling average increase in total deaths attributable to the virus is now seven.
Meanwhile. the Omicron wave continues to recede with rates not seen since the start of the outbreak earlier this year.
The seven-day rolling average of hospitalisations is 326, while a week ago it was 436.
The other cases in hospital are in Northland: 4; Waitematā: 38; Counties Manukau: 17; Auckland: 48; Waikato: 57; Bay of Plenty: 9; Lakes: 9; Hawke’s Bay: 7; MidCentral: 15; Whanganui: 0; Taranaki: 3; Tairawhiti: 0; Wairarapa: 6; Capital & Coast: 17; Hutt Valley: 4; Nelson Marlborough: 4; West Coast: 1; and Southern: 5.
The falling rate of infected people in hospital and intensive care was the lowest seen in more than six months.
Auckland still remains the region most affected by Covid with 115 people in the hospital and more than 5705 active cases. Canterbury currently has 1678 active cases, while South Canterbury has 167.
