Turf at a central Dunedin sports ground has been ripped up by a car, leaving a sports official frustrated.

Tyre tracks were left on a section of the Oval, in Princes St, on Saturday night.

Football South chief executive Chris Wright said vandalism like this tended to happen a couple of times a year.

"That’s pretty frustrating," he said.

It was particularly challenging when it happened at the Oval because it was the site of its biggest community programme.

"We have to do quite a lot of work to move it to another location. Sometimes we have to split it over multiple locations because we really don’t have anywhere bigger than the Oval."

Some grounds had measures such as bollards to keep vehicles out, but it was difficult at other grounds, due to their size or layout, he said.

"It’s a shame that because of one or two people out there, it’s ruined it for a large number of participants."

A police spokeswoman said by early yesterday afternoon, the incident had not been reported to police.

In September last year, a car believed to have been involved in ripping up the Oval was later found with a cricket net wrapped around its chassis and stolen beer kegs in the back.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with burglary.
