At least one person is dead after a speeding driver crashed into another vehicle at Silverdale last night.
At 9:20pm yesterday a vehicle crashed on the corner of East Coast Road and Hibiscus Highway, Silverdale.
Members of the public earlier saw the vehicle speeding and travelling on the wrong side of the road.
The vehicle collided into another vehicle and a traffic pole. The driver of the speeding vehicle died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was moderately injured.
Before the crash, a police patrol unit in the area also saw the first vehicle speed past and tried to locate it.
The Serious Crash Investigation Unit was investigating and police were advising relatives early this morning.
A local resident told the Herald she heard one car "speeding" past her house and the sound of sirens followed shortly thereafter.
"I heard the speeding car and then I heard the patrol car," she said. "We've driven down to have a look - it's a terrible wreckage."
The crash happened outside the Pak'n Save in Silverdale.
The Fire Service and ambulance staff confirmed they were called to the two-car crash about 9.20pm.
