Canterbury police are investigating a sudden death on Horotane Valley Rd, Heathcote Valley on Friday, September 19.
The death is not believed to be suspicious.
Police are looking to identify the deceased who is thought to be a man in his 30s or 40s, with a distinctive birthmark on his left forearm.
When located by police he was wearing a black long-sleeved woollen jersey, black trousers, and brown and grey tramping boots.
A backpack was also found with the deceased.
Police are asking the public to contact them with any information that could assist with their inquiries.
