Amateur Te Anau photographer Chris Watson walked to the top of the Crown Range to get this photo of the aurora australis which ‘‘spilled all over southern skies’’ on Wednesday.

Mr Watson said he had taken many aurora photos, and doing so usually meant pointing the camera south.

However, this time, no matter where he pointed the lens, ‘‘the whole frame was just covered in colour’’.
