The South Canterbury Indoor Bowls Ladies 8’s team put in a creditable performance in Alexandra at the weekend, finishing third at this tournament. It was a good result taking into account players had to make themselves available at short notice as some regular team members withdrew due to a variety of reasons. Although they could not retain the trophy they won last year, all players made the adjustment to the standard required at this level and the newcomers gained valuable experience.
A highlight of the weekend was Janet Briggs, who was playing second in South Canterbury team 2, being top equal in overall points. Along with Jeanette Kuiti, of Southland, they both scored 23 points but Jeanette won this trophy as she had 78.5 ends to Janet’s 77.5. Carolyn Cooper was also in the top 10, coming in 7th place with 20 points. Debra Ruffell was the best performed South Canterbury singles player, winning her five games. Lyn Brown had four wins and a draw and Janet Briggs had four wins.
The winning team at this tournament was Southland with 124 points. Second place was Otago with 114.5 points. South Canterbury was third on 103.5 points. South Otago got 76.5 points, Central Otago 69.5 and North Otago 52.
• This Sunday, two South Canterbury teams will compete in Ashburton for the Prattley trophy and those team members are J Whiting, K Anngow, J Lockyer and A Reid, and D Cooper, D Mealings, C Cooper and D Ruffell. This will be a welcome return for Jenelle Lockyer, who has just come back from Tasmania after representing the New Zealand Mat Blacks, winning the Henselite trophy in a three day test against Australia last weekend.
There is also a triples triangular tournament in Timaru on Sunday. South Canterbury, Canterbury and Ashburton will contest this. Teams are:
