Racing: Sunny Demon warming to task

He is not quite showing some of the worst traits of his half-sister, Armbro Demon, but Sunny Demon is still in the learning phase as he lines up in the feature trot at Forbury Park tonight.

Armbro Demon, who had speed to burn, was notorious for having a mind of her own at trials and on race day but Sunny Demon - despite being by fiery sire Sundon - is slightly more settled, his driver, Rory McIlwrick said.

"He's got the motor, but the mind is not quite up to where the motor is just yet and he does get up on the nickel a bit,'' McIlwrick said.

"But that maybe doesn't hurt at this stage. He's getting a wee bit better. He's had a few things changed round on him and I wouldn't say he's 100% but he's definitely reasonably fit and well.''

The 5yr-old is lightly tried with just six starts under the belt, including two races this campaign for a fifth at Forbury Park in October before finishing second behind Anothersuperstar.

Tonight's c1-c3 assignment is a touch harder, with smart horses on the back mark of 20m.

"Those back-markers, if they do things right - the likes of Queen Kenny and Heard The Whisper [if he backs up from Addington last night] - they'll be tough to beat.

"But he'll be thereabouts if they make mistakes.''

Gyrate is the top tip for trainer Amber Hoffman's Westwood Beach team and McIlwrick is happy to play the waiting game from barrier 1 on the second line.

"That's not the worst draw in a junior drivers' race,'' he said.

"You just sit there, do nothing and hope for a bit of luck. The one we follow out [Danny Del Vito] is probably not the worst and it just depends what it follows if we get too far back

"Uncle Ben is quite a nice type so he might slot across and dictate. It will be interesting to see what happens there.''

Rare Pocket (race 6) comes to Forbury Park with an unflattering form line from last season, having just two starts for no reward at Motukarara.

But plenty of respect will be paid to the Changeover mare now she is in the colours of Westwood Beach trainer Graeme Anderson.

"Graeme does a great job so I presume he'll be fit and ready and we'll be having a crack anyway,'' McIlwrick said.

"We'll roll across and see where we land. It's fit and it should be thereabouts in a maiden.''

McIlwrick rated Hokuri Railrida (race 8) as the best of his other three drives, despite dropping out at Ascot Park on December 4 with dehydration.

"He just has to get back to the form he had fresh-up.

"A stand probably doesn't suit him but if he put his best foot forward, he would be tough in a c1.''
