Stability
Good early signs in the season that the front row can withstand pressure. In a messy and error-riddled opening half, Matatū packed down against the Blues 15 times in the first 40 minutes. Talk about a big shift. Pip Love, Georgia Ponsonby and Amy Rule really took charge when needed through those periods to offer something for their side.
Rocky start
Matatū dropped their opening ball — and that is how most of the first half continued. There were clearly some early nerves from both sides, with the first points of the game coming mere minutes before the halftime whistle. Missing touch, knock-ons and ball-handling were concerns for both teams, but no doubt areas they will be looking to rectify this weekend.
Big signing
Kaipo Olsen-Baker might just be Matatū’s new secret weapon. The powerful No 8 made the switch from the Hurricanes Poua, and made some debut in her new colours on Saturday. Brutal at the back of the scrum, Olsen-Baker made some robust carries up the park and created something every time the ball was in her hands — and do not forget about her defensive work. Her addition has called for a shake-up in the back row. Kendra Reynolds started at openside but was replaced by Lucy Jenkins at halftime. Will be interesting to see how their roles are utilised.
Breakdown
Matatū were good defensively around the breakdown, and that is going to be vital through the season. Players were straight over the ball — Reynolds made some big steals in the first half — and stunted the Blues’ momentum. But the most pleasing part of that was being able to turn stolen ball into points. Matatū were over the ball and went 13 phases to eventually score through Grace Brooker. Just need more of that.
Final thoughts
Nice to see so many Otago Spirit players involved on Saturday. Georgia Cormick, Cheyenne Cunningham and Maia Joseph — the latter two making their debuts — all had nice cameos off the bench. Look forward to seeing Eilis Doyle, Leah Miles and Tegan Hollows soon.
