Since 1861, the Otago Daily Times has been telling the stories that matter, championing our people and sticking up for the South. We may have changed in the 160+ years since the first edition went to print, but our commitment to the South never has.

We’re proud to be New Zealand’s most trusted newspaper. For the past four years, the Otago Daily Times has been recognised as the most trusted newspaper in the annual Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand survey, reflecting our commitment to quality journalism in the South.

“We give people information they want and they need; to make informed decisions in their own lives and to be active participants in the organisations and events that shape their communities.”

Paul McIntyre, Editor-in-Chief

That’s the power of local journalism. Timely, relevant, and trusted information that helps communities stay connected, engaged, and in control of their futures.

And we’re award-winning too:

Three Allied Media journalists were recognised at the New Zealand Guild of Agricultural Journalists and Communicators annual awards in 2024:

  • Tim Cronshaw (Rural Life / ODT) - Alliance Group Ltd Red Meat Industry Journalism Award
  • Shawn McAvinue (Rural Life / ODT) - Beef + Lamb Hard News Award
  • Sally Rae (Rural Life / ODT) - joint runner-up in the Ministry for Primary Industries Rongo Award (Southern Rural Life).

A subscription to the ODT doesn’t just support our journalists; it supports the region. We have reporters across the South, telling stories that matter, holding power to account, and going into bat for our people. If we didn't cover the South so extensively, then nobody else would.
