Blue skies, fresh snow and wide smiles were at the heart of the Adaptive Open Day held at The Remarkables last Saturday.

Seventeen people with disabilities were joined by volunteers and specially-trained instructors to prove that anyone can enjoy the freedom of snowsports.

Ross James, Adaptive Programme Coordinator at The Remarkables said he was extremely pleased with how the day went.

"We were fully subscribed with more than double the participants of last year. We had people from a wide range of background and disabilities. Some returning to the sport after injury, some trying adaptive snowsports for the first time and some seasoned pros," he said.

"The enthusiasm from all participants and volunteers was fantastic. It was great to see the program exceeding the expectations of people with various visual, physical, and cognitive disabilities. We achieved our mission of making snowsports accessible to everyone in our beautiful alpine environment."

The Remarkables offers a full adaptive programme with specially qualified instructors equipment and volunteers. Anyone with a disability can ski or ride by calling Ross James on 03 442 6714 or email adaptive@theremarkables.co.nz.

Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence praised Ross James for his passion and commitment to assist in providing such huge support for this worthy cause. "It is so satisfying and inspiring to see people with disabilities achieving in the sport and receiving such positive support to make it happen.
