Hinds junior farmers look to be more than capable of filling the gumboots of their older counterparts.
The Hinds Agris team of Ella Yeatman, William Ward and Hayden Jefferson, of Hinds School, won top honours in the Aorangi Regional AgriKidsNZ competition in Fairlie on Easter Monday.
And it was a Hinds Young Farmers' Club member, James Davidson (25), who won the adult competition - this year's Aorangi Regional final of the ANZ Young Farmer Contest.
The school-aged events ran alongside the Young Farmer's event at the Mackenzie Highland A&P Show and 27 AgriKidsNZ and 14 TeenAg teams entered.
High Country Hillbillies Holly Malcolm and Ella Sanderson, from St Kevin's College, in Oamaru, won the TeenAg event.
The Gumboot Girls, Georgia Malcolm and Brittany Caldwell, also from St Kevin's College, gave them a run for their money but in the end had to settle for second place.
The Moist Musters, Cody Callaghan and Thomas Yeatman, of Timaru Boys' High School, were third.
Second in the AgriKidsNZ event was the Crazy Cows team of Ben Chambers, Sam Wilson and Ben Thompson, of Ashburton Intermediate School, and third place went to Geraldine Musterers, Patrick Foley-Smith, Tim Sheed and Mitchell Sowden, from Geraldine High School and Geraldine Primary School.
AgriKidsNZ is open to children aged 8 to 13, who compete as teams of three. Those from 13 to 18 can pair up to compete in the TeenAg competition.
The competitions mirror the adult competition and test skill, strength and stamina.
The top three teams from each regional final are invited to attend the grand final in Christchurch, which starts on July 3, to compete for the national championship.
