Is there more to this transformer than meets the eye?

No. It is not a robot. It is exactly what it looks like — a 7.5MVA transformer.

It is the newest and one of the largest transformers in the Aurora Energy network and was installed at the Outram zone substation in Huntly Rd, yesterday.

Aurora Energy project manager Wiaan Booyens said it was the oldest substation on Aurora’s network, and the transformers and associated equipment had reached their "end-of-life" cycle and needed to be replaced.

Previously, the substation contained two 3MVA transformers which were in average condition and were manufactured in 1952.

He said the peak load on the substation in normal network configuration was 2.9MVA, but peak demand was growing.

"One of the old transformers recently failed, leaving only one old transformer, almost at full capacity, in service.

"Being a new and bigger transformer, the 7.5MVA should be more reliable, require less maintenance and cater for future growth."

He said there was provision for a second 7.5MVA transformer to be installed in the future.

As part of the project, a new 11kV switchroom is being constructed to house the new 11kV switchboard and protection relay panels.

The outdoor 33kV circuit breakers will also be replaced.

The Outram zone substation was built in 1932 and is a large supplier of electricity in Dunedin.

It converts high voltage electricity at 33kV from the Waipori overhead lines into a lower voltage of 11kV for distribution around Outram and the Taieri Plain, including Dunedin Airport.

Firstly, the question "Is there more to this transformer than meets the eye?" Then in the content "No there's not" Blatant click bait and cheap, the ODT has sunk to new levels.

Secondly, "The Outram zone substation was built in 1932 and is a large supplier of electricity in Dunedin." Then in the next sentence "...distribution around Outram and the Taieri Plain, including Dunedin Airport." Does this transformer supply Dunedin city or not?
