Extreme sports lover Lewis Ferris is not fazed by a lack of competition in his favourite activity, he just makes the most of getting out there and doing it.

‘‘I'm into extreme kind of things. So it's out there getting the heart racing.''

The 17-year-old got into freestyle BMX when he was 13 and travelled to jump parks in Wanaka and Queenstown most weekends.

A lack of competitions in the Otago area means he does not have many BMX achievements to his name, but he is not fazed as he simply loves the freedom of the sport.

‘‘I can do what I want, when I want,'' he said.

Lewis has also snowboarded for the past four years and passed the advanced course at Cardrona through the college.

Another sport he in which he is heavily involved is football, which he took up at age 7.

For some of his football career he has represented Central Otago teams and for the past three he has played in the Central Galaxy team, a youth team with a few adults, which plays in the Central Otago league.

With this team, he travelled to England and Italy two years ago for an educational trip.

It was for two weeks and he views it as an absolute highlight.

In his spare time, if he is not on his bike, he likes kicking a ball around with his friends.

Academically, Lewis has always been top of his class and received NCEA level one with excellence and level two with merit.

This year he aims to get level three with merit in his subjects of calculus, statistics, physical education, chemistry and physics, gain university entrance and achieve dux.

His school duties include being deputy head boy, house leader for Nevis and the college's representative at an Anzac service.

Achievements: Deputy head boy; NCEA level one with excellence, level two with merit; Central Otago football representative; Otago snow sports competitor.

Role Model: He respects people who are honest. "It's always more helpful."

Hopes for the future: To continue biking and study either surveying or engineering at Canterbury University.
