Jon Thom says striking a balance in life is important - and it needs to be.

Jon is a top sports competitor, excels at academic subjects, and is involved in several school leadership and cultural activities.

The 18-year-old says playing rugby for the school 1st XV affords many social opportunities and appeals to his competitive nature.

He says a recent highlight was being voted head boy, and although he describes himself as "naturally shy", school leadership is helping him become a more confident public speaker.

He is on the school's youth committee, and this year the group's main initiatives are to have tennis courts resurfaced and to promote youth activities.

Jon says his work on the school's environment committee could get messy later this year, as it attempts to "resurrect" a recycling scheme.

"We have been looking at sustainability and the general environment. At primary school kids have schemes but they get to secondary school and they don't continue.

"We plan to lay out a week's rubbish on the playing field to show its easy not to think about the amount of waste being produced every-day."

Achievements: Youth and environment committee member (2007-08); Youth For Understanding university exchange (2007); excellence NCEA year 12 (all subjects); Rotary Science Forum, Auckland (2008).

Role models: "My parents and family. They are successful in whatever they do. For rugby, players like Carl Hayman and Ritchie McCaw and at the moment artist [Ronald Brooks] Kitaj. I really like his pop art paintings."

Hopes for the future: "To study health sciences and law and then to travel and live overseas."
