It is best to accept life may involve a few bunkers and birdies according to Gore High School prefect Cameron Winsloe (18).

The 18-year-old pupil says playing sport has helped him develop a philosophical outlook which helps him evaluate "the ups and downs", in all aspects of his life.

Cameron says his introduction to his main sport, golf, came two years ago, when he first played a round with his younger brother at a local course.

"I went just to make up the numbers, but was hooked straight away."

He has since gone from making up the numbers to reducing others quickly, and now plays off a nine handicap.

He recently captained a team which won the Southland Secondary Schools golf championships. The win guaranteed the team entry to the national Secondary Schools tournament in September.

But with golf, the highs can quickly be followed by lows.

"Every golfer has those moments - and that's the 'joy of golf'. Your play can be great one day and then completely average the next."

But while Cameron could justifiably be proud of various sporting achievements, he says a highlight of the year was becoming a school prefect.

Achievements: 2nd Southland Secondary Schools tennis tournament (2005, 2008); Eastern Southland U14 and U16 tennis representative; School basketball `A' team member (2006-07); Eastern Southland U15 and U17 basketball representative (2006); Men's Eastern Southland basketball representative; Three stroke medley swimming record holder (2007); Southland junior golf representative; Gore Golf Club most promising Junior golfer (2007); Anderson House leader; peer support leader; school camp leader; prefects variety concert participant.

Role model: "Phil Micholson. I like his style of play, his putting, and his mental attitude."

Hopes for the future: "To study physical education at the University of Otago. I'd also like to think I will be able good to reduce my handicap further."
