Boost for genetics

Prof Peter Gluckman, a distinguished Auckland medical researcher and the Prime Minister's chief science adviser, will speak at a function to launch a new genetics research centre at the University of Otago this week.

Genetics Otago director Dr Peter Dearden says the research network aims to establish itself as New Zealand's leading centre for advanced genetics research and teaching.

An award-winning Otago University biochemist, Dr Dearden is now based at the research network's new office, which began operating in the university biochemistry department yesterday.

Prof Gluckman is an Otago University medical graduate, and founding director of the Liggins Institute for Medical Research.

It was "just wonderful" that a scientist of Prof Gluckman's standing was able to attend the centre launch function, at the Otago University Council Chambers on Thursday, Dr Dearden said.

The centre would foster links between Otago researchers and promote further national and international research connections.

As well, educational materials would be developed for school use.
