‘Incredible talent’ in show inspired by singing animals

A colourful cast of singing animals is the inspiration behind an annual show that is "bigger and better than ever before".

The Gang Show is an original musical comedy performance produced by scouts and guides from Otago and Southland.

This year’s show entitled, The Gang Show Must Go On, reimagines the story of the animated movie Sing!

It tells the story of a crazy koala’s efforts to stop a theatre from being demolished by hosting a singing competition.

Dunedin’s very own Mayfair Theatre would stand in for the at-risk theatre in this adaptation.

The cast of 70 included some of the show’s youngest performers to date, with children as young as 10 taking to the stage.

Gang show marketing manager, Shanna Verhoef, said the show was wild ride of non-stop entertainment with no slow bits.

The source material gave the children lots of opportunities to play a wide variety of parts, Ms Verhoef said.

"Every show we do is bigger and better than ever before."

"It’s a great movie with a really fun storyline for kids and it gives the opportunity for lots of different fun parts of the show to come out."

Audience members could expect a combination of classical musical numbers and pop songs.

Matilda, Oliver and Monty Python would join the likes of Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons and Prince.

Gang show co-director, Noel Walker, said the selection of music would complement the storyline really well.

He was impressed by the efforts of the over 100 volunteers who worked on the production.

"They’ve done an incredible job and shown incredible talent to produce a very high-quality show for a group of young people," Mr Walker said.

He said the performers had worked hard perfecting their singing, acting and dancing skills and this would all come together on opening night.

Audience members could look forward to a spectacular opening act and the end of the first half when all of the cast comes together, he said.

In the scene were the theatre is saved, he said there would be a real surprise that the audience would have to see for themselves.

The show will be performed at the Mayfair Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday.
