The Generators, comprising blues musicians Oscar LaDell, on harmonica, and his father, Leo LaDell, on acoustic guitar, perform at Iona Church, Port Chalmers, yesterday.

More than 40 people attended the 3.30pm Summertime Blues event, part of a series of ''3.30 at Iona'' concerts.

US-born Leo LaDell, of Purakaunui, said he enjoyed playing the blues during the summer holiday break, when people were relaxing, but also thinking about life's meaning.

''I get a sense of being out among the community, which is a nice feeling.''

He greatly enjoyed playing the blues.

Blues ''feels important to me'', and he enjoyed connecting both with strangers and friends, who shared a common love of music.

The Iona summer musical concert series continues this Saturday with a 3.30pm Celtic Fusion performance by Tessa White and Jonathan Le Cocq.
