Call to improve breastfeeding facilities

Dunedin mums say the city's breastfeeding facilities are inadequate and run-down.

The comments were made at a well-attended breastfeeding morning tea at the Plaza Cafe yesterday, one of many events being held across the South for World Breastfeeding Week, which runs from August 1 to 7.

The event was attended by representatives from WellSouth and the Dunedin Breastfeeding Network, providing an opportunity for breastfeeding mothers to meet and share information.

First-time mother Loz Barwick, who moved to Dunedin from Australia one month ago with her husband, was there with 9-month-old Eli.

Mrs Barwick said she attended because she was ''very passionate about breastfeeding'' and wanted to meet other mothers here.

''I know it's good for him, it's great bonding and I want to meet other mothers who are also breastfeeding.''

However, she said there was a lack of spaces in Dunedin for breastfeeding mothers.

''It was very cramped in that little feeding room in the mall.

''I think there needs to be more spaces in public centres that we can feed our bubs.

''I struggled to find . . . places to relax and feed him.''

Beki Forbes, who was there with her 6-month-old and 2-year-old, said she wanted to connect with other mothers who were also ''tandem feeding''.

She also said facilities for breastfeeding mothers in the city left much to be desired.

''They're often quite dingy and beside the toilets as well, which can sometimes be convenient but also a wee bit gross.''
