Police looking for burglar after 'juicy' crime

A Dunedin burglar got one of his five-plus-a-day on the wrong side of the law last night.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson said the health-conscious bandit had entered a property in Moreau St, St Kilda, where they had nabbed several ripe tomatoes from the garden.

The property owner had reported the incident to police, and the incident had been entered in the system as a burglary, Snr Sgt Thomson said.

A police spokeswoman said Dunedin officers had attended and would be following up any leads from forensic evidence at the ''juicy" crime, but a lack of half-eaten tomatoes meant it would be difficult to gather DNA evidence.

In another St Kilda incident last night, an Annex St homeowner returned to find their door wide open despite having left it locked.

The incident had also been coded as a burglary, Snr Sgt Thomson said, though nothing had been taken from the property.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
