Otago Museum brought its "science show offs'' educational programme to the Dunedin Hospital children's ward yesterday.

This programme aims to boost awareness of science and to encourage communication about it among young people.

The programme involves science experiments undertaken in unexpected places.

Youngsters in the children's ward undertook fun experiments, including one which demonstrated aspects of "elastic energy'', showing that a sharp wooden stick could be pushed through a balloon without popping it.

The overall programme includes a competition for years 7 to 13 school pupils, in which "show off'' presentations by senior pupils are recorded by cellphone and submitted to the museum over the next four weeks.
