Dunedin City Council transport engineering and road safety team leader Hjarne Poulsen said the previous 11 Barnes Dance crossings were "working well - they've increased safety for pedestrians", and turning drivers no longer had to wait for people to cross.
Thursday's conversion work went smoothly, as Downer contract staff controlled the intersection with hand-held signs from 9am.
The intersection upgrade is expected to cost $35,000. In the Barnes Dance system, traffic stops and, when signalled by the lights, pedestrians may cross in any direction, including diagonally.
