Johan (12) and his sister Lisa Lokman (10) take part in a Hanami cherry blossom viewing event in front of the University of Otago clocktower yesterday.

Organiser Haruko Stuart said the event attracted more than 200 people and she believed it had been the most popular of eight annual spring Hanami, or flower-viewing, events held there.

Ms Stuart is a teaching fellow in the Otago department of languages and cultures' Japanese programme, and the latest event was presented in conjunction with the Dunedin-Otaru Sister Cities Society.

Spring flower viewing was once celebrated elaborately by Japanese aristocrats in and before the 12th century, and had remained widely popular in Japan and elsewhere, she said.

The Dunedin event echoed the traditional Japanese celebration of spring and the appearance of cherry blossom, known as ''sakura'' in Japan.
