Healthy choices for students for decades

Parents love Errol White, even though they have never met him.

That's because the Brunch 'n Lunch owner in Frederick St has been making sure their children at the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic are eating healthy meals on a regular basis.

Over the past 20 years, he has become affectionately known as "dad" to many students because he provides the food that parents would approve of - like roast dinners that can be reheated, and the usual healthy sandwiches.

"Sometimes they come in and accidentally call me dad, and that worries me. I have to take a close look at those ones," he joked.

More recently, some have taken to calling the 64-year-old "granddad".

"As long as they don't think I'm their parent, that's OK for me."

After more than 30 years in the catering business, he announced yesterday he was selling the popular business and officially retiring.

"It's about time I called it a day. I always thought I would when I got to this age."

He hoped the new owners would continue to provide the healthy meals, and continue the family feel of the business.

It was what made customers queue out the door most lunchtimes, he said.

"The food that we produce is fresh every day. And I think it's the good friendly staff.

"If they don't continue, I'll probably get a few messages from parents wanting me to come back," he said.
