It takes him two weeks to put them up, but Richard Milmine always makes sure his Christmas lights are down before the new year.

His is one of multiple Christmas light displays starting to appear around Dunedin and Mosgiel as December rolls around again.

Mr Milmine has been erecting elaborate displays for more than a decade and said people usually started asking him in October when he was going to start putting them up.

The display at his Braeside home has become an important part of the family’s yearly festivities.

It all started when the glow of one of his displays caught the eye of his daughter, he said.

"Years ago I had one light display in my window and my daughter asked if people were going to come and have a look.

"It just [grew] from there pretty much."

His preference was to buy the decorations on special at the end of each year to stock up for the next.

He did not go out of his way to outdo his previous feats but aimed to have some variety from time to time, with the collection naturally growing as he spotted something he took a shine to.

This year’s highlights included reindeer flickering atop the roof and inflatable characters lining the driveway.

Most lights were plug-in ones running on a timer from 7.30pm to midnight, accompanied by some solar-powered pieces.

His displays had become quite the family tradition, with his other daughter following in his footsteps and decorating her own home, Mr Milmine said.

It was not just children who appreciated the display. Trucks on the nearby motorway were starting to show their appreciation with a passing toot as well, he said.
