Organiser Demelza Fraser-O'Donnell feeds Isabella Fraser-O'Donnell (18 months) during an annual mass breast-feeding event in Dunedin yesterday.
A mass breast-feeding event at the Wall Street mall in Dunedin yesterday to mark World Breastfeeding Week went "very well" and helped raise community awareness, organisers said.

The Wall Street event and others, including elsewhere in Dunedin and Otago, were staged as part of the "Big Latch On".

This simultaneous event was run throughout the country by Women's Health Action and staged internationally in association with World Breastfeeding Week, which ends next Tuesday.

Thirty-seven mothers simultaneously breastfed in the mall, the same as at last year's event, organisers said.

Five mothers also breastfed at the Taieri Parents Centre, Mosgiel.

Dunedin organiser Demelza Fraser-O'Donnell was "quite proud" of how well yesterday's event had gone in its third year at the Wall Street venue.

Mothers told her they had enjoyed taking part, she said.

The event raised public awareness about breastfeeding in public, and alerted mothers about how to gain support, she said.

Otago and Southland Plunket area manager Barb Long said breastfeeding was a skill that required learning for mothers and babies and "plenty of support" was available for mothers, including through PlunketLine (0800 933 922), which operated 24 hours a day.

Jo Shanks, who took part with 11-month-old son Jaxon, said the Wall Street event was "awesome".

Ashleigh Whitty, who participated with 8-month-old son Isaac Mitchell, said the event showed breastfeeding was a "natural" activity.

Breastfeeding facilities are provided in several places in central Dunedin, including the Wall Street mall, but some mothers said they would like to see more stores provide facilities.
