Tourists found themselves driving in circles, but other than that, work yesterday that closed Portobello Rd on the Otago Peninsula went off without a hitch.

The road was closed from about 2km east of Vauxhall from 9am till 4pm, while Delta workers (pictured) using 100-tonne and 50-tonne cranes, relocated power poles and lines away from a slip area. Work also involved removing a tree.

Traffic was diverted along Highcliff Rd.

''We're really grateful. People have been really patient,'' Dunedin City Council transport group technical officer Michael Tannock said.

Some tourists, however, struck trouble. Some took a detour to Highcliff Rd along Shore St, but once they reached Waverley their GPS navigation systems sent them down Doon St, back to Portobello Rd.

The road will be closed again on Friday.
