The MP for Dunedin South is asking acting Prime Minister Winston Peters to force Kiwibank to drop its plan to close the area's Kiwibank and Post Shop.

Writing as Dunedin South Electorate MP, Clare Curran expressed concern at the ''impending closure at the end of this month of the Kiwibank branch in King Edward St''.

Kiwibank and New Zealand Post announced earlier this month they were closing four joint branches around Dunedin - South Dunedin, Moray Pl, Dunedin North and Mosgiel.

Kiwibank will open a stand-alone branch in central Dunedin, while NZ Post is looking for ''partner businesses'' to help it deliver postal services in affected areas.

In her letter to Mr Peters, who is also Minister of State Owned Enterprises, Ms Curran said Kiwibank needed to ''confirm its commitment to Dunedin citizens and in particular South Dunedin''.

She said a large number of people in the densely populated electorate would find it difficult to travel to the central city and were unable to use internet banking.

''Many of [the residents] are on fixed incomes and rely on the service that Kiwibank provides.''

South Dunedin resident Br Graeme Donaldson, who helped organise a petition to oppose the closure of the King Edward St NZ Post and Kiwibank, praised Ms Curran's work ''behind the scenes''.

The petition had more than 400 signatures online, and paper copies had been distributed to ''every shop and business from the Oval to the beach,'' the octogenarian Br Donaldson said.
