A few carparks have been put back into a contentious cycleway project in Dunedin.

The Dunedin City Council said nine carparks had been added to its Albany St connection project to provide more parking near businesses.

They would be in two areas on the northern side of Albany St — near the University Library and opposite Hyde St.

The move followed some heat from property owners and business people in the area about the council’s approach to consultation.

Its process was vulnerable to a legal challenge and it was prudent to re-consult to ensure "council’s process is robust and that all affected parties have the opportunity to be heard", the council disclosed last year.

The Albany St project has been described by the council as aiming to provide a safe walking and cycling connection between the Otago Harbour shared path and the tertiary education area and central business district.

It would also consume or reposition dozens of carparks.

It would cost $3 million to construct and the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi would provide 51%.

The council said the project was put on hold last year until funding was reconfirmed in its 2025-34 long-term plan, which was adopted last month.

It is seeking public feedback about parking restrictions.

The council said the project included improvements for pedestrians and bus users and it would enhance safety.

"A new design approach and the co-operation of the University of Otago around using driveway space that will be unused in future made this possible," transport group manager Jeanine Benson said.

"DCC is considering planting native trees to replace the three trees that will be taken out to accommodate additional carparks outside the University Library."
