Robbery and violence

Police are on the hunt for a group of men who jumped from a car and assaulted pedestrians before robbing them in two separate incidents in Dunedin on Sunday morning.

The incidents were part of a weekend filled with drunk and disorderly behaviour which resulted in 15 arrests.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said a man was hit about the head on George St near Willowbank Dairy by four people at 1am yesterday.

The men then took his food before climbing back into their car and driving off.

The same car was identified in a similar incident at 1.50am, when another male was assaulted by two men and had his wallet taken, at Glenpark Ave, near the steps to Mailer St.

Both victims received minor injuries and although the offenders had not been located, police were following strong lines of inquiry, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The incidents were just two of a large number of assaults which stretched police resources in Dunedin on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Between 10.15pm on Saturday and 7am on Sunday: a man with a large knife attempted to rob the BP service station near the Oval, on Princes St; there were eight assaults just within the central city area; plus there were 16 other reports of fights, abusive yelling and disorderly behaviour in the Dunedin area.

Due to the volume of incidents, only about 15 people were arrested.

Snr Sgt Aitken said it was a typical amount for a busy night in Dunedin, but there could have been "a lot more locked up than there were".

"[Saturday night] in general, we had a lot of angry, drunk people out and about.

It was just one of those nights where it was job after job looking after drunk and aggressive people.

"It's disappointing.

People should be able to have a good night out without being harangued by drunk people.

By 7am on Sunday, we'd all had enough of it."

Snr Sgt Aitken said he was surprised it was such a "violent" night, given the success of the Otago and All Blacks rugby teams.

"We thought it would be a quiet night with a happy crowd.

"It sounds like happy obviously had the night off and grumpy took his place."
