About 30 people start their 10km Anzac Day run to the Soldiers Monument Lookout in Highcliff Rd from Ocean Grove Sportsground at 10am yesterday.

Leith Athletic Club president Chris Sole said the run was in recognition of the Anzac soldiers and women who lost their lives at war.

"The run basically is a tribute we have done for the past few years."

He said the monument was a very special place on the peninsula from where you could get a 360deg view of Otago Harbour.

The runners got to the lookout in time to watch a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8A Poseidon fly past.
