Billions of dollars in funding for the environment and trades training is good news for New Zealand teens, a Dunedin high school pupil says.

Otago Girls’ High School pupil Sofia Amer (17) said environmental issues were a major concern, and she was pleased $1.1billion was allocated for a range of environmental initiatives in yesterday’s Budget.

"Being able to live in a more environmentally friendly, green country is definitely a big thing for me."

She noted weed control in southern waterways as a big win.

With the effects of Covid-19 set to hit many industries hard over the next few years, Miss Amer believed many of her peers would consider taking advantage of a boost for trades training, rather than options they had previously been weighing up.

"I think a lot more people will look at apprenticeships now."

She was planning to go to university next year, and felt getting a part-time job to support herself may be more difficult.

But in the longer term, she was not too concerned about her job prospects.
