Time to smell the roses

Keith Harris admires his "Tropical Skies" rose bloom which won the Champion of Champions at the Otago Rose Society’s show at the weekend.

Mr Harris was "absolutely" surprised he came away with the win, as he almost didn’t enter.

"I had two blooms and I thought ‘will I or won’t I?’."

He was worried the flowers would not be any good. However, he went ahead and entered the rose, which was only a bud on Thursday.

It had  bloomed by Saturday.

The recent dry weather meant a lot of flowers bloomed earlier than usual and would have been ready too soon for the show.

Show president Linda Hellyer said despite the weather affecting  flowers, there were still more entrants than last year with 247 roses entered.

"The weather has made it pretty tough for some of the roses," she said.

Overall, she was happy with how many people entered and the calibre of the roses.
