
More than a hint of pink was in evidence as the female-focused event visited Clutha for the first time, giving women a chance to test their mettle during two minutes of rubber-burning furore.
Organiser Shelly Boer, of Sliding Designs in Ashburton, said the sport was taking off among women across Australasia.
"We’ve got 23 females here today, which is amazing. We want to encourage more women into the sport. These girls are the face of Kiwi burnouts going forward.
"I only started myself a couple of years ago, and know it can be a bit intimidating first time out. But the girls are super-supportive, and have picked up skills and ability level real quick during training and now competition today.
"Once you try it, you catch the bug."
She said women brought "style and charisma" to the pad.
A supporting cast of partners and other male competitors concluded proceedings with a "mini-comp" yesterday.
