Several factors will be examined to determine how a man died after his car ended up in a Waikato ditch overnight, police say.
The man's body was discovered near Te Aroha in the Matamata-Piako district just after midnight as officers made their way to a different incident.
His damaged Mazda car was discovered at the intersection of State Highway 26 and Lovegrove Rd, police said.
"It appears the 35-year-old driver has been heading north on Lovegrove Rd towards the T-intersection with SH26 and failed to stop, ending up colliding with the bank," district road policing manager, acting Inspector Kevin Anderson, said.
The Serious Crash Unit will examine a number of factors to establish the cause of the crash.
"We will be awaiting the results of a variety of tests to determine what, if any, part speed, alcohol, the not wearing of a seatbelt or a lack of warrant and registration may have played in the crash," he said.
"In the interim we ask that motorists take every step to ensure both they and their vehicles are fit for the road and they drive to survive."
Ambulance staff and firefighters also attended the scene.
An ambulance spokeswoman said the man was dead on arrival.
