North Island rattled by quake

An earthquake shook areas from the central North Island down to Wellington this afternoon, and was felt as far away as Canterbury.

GeoNet reported the magnitude 5.3 quake, centred 10km southwest of Turangi at a depth of 114km, struck at 12.50pm.

Reports by people using Twitter indicated it was felt in Wellington, Palmerston North, and Christchurch, where quakes and aftershocks have been agitating the city for almost two years.
