Depending on the weather, Dunedin people may have one of the best views in the country of a lunar eclipse, starting about 8pm today.
The moon will start entering the earth's umbral shadow about 10.15pm, will finally leave it about 1.35am tomorrow morning.
The total eclipse would last nearly an hour from about 11.25pm to 12.24am, the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand said.
During a lunar eclipse the moon slowly goes dark and turns red, resulting in a 'blood moon'.
Astronomer Dr Ian Griffin, who is director of the Otago Museum, said weather permitting, Dunedin would be a "really good spot'' to watch the eclipse.
