A New Zealand woman killed after watching a plane take off in the Caribbean has been named.
Gayleen McEwan, of Blenheim, died after hitting her head when she was knocked over by the blast of a passenger jet taking off at St Maarten.
The 57-year-old was a mother-of-three who was on holiday with husband Phill and two Kiwi friends, Fairfax reported on Friday.
A police report said the incident happened about 6pm on Wednesday (local time) at Beacon Hill Road on Maho Beach right near the airport.
Several people were apparently holding on to the airport fence by the Princess Juliana International Airport.
Sister-in-law Janice McEwan said the family in Marlborough were in shock.
"We're just devastated, that's the word that comes to mind. We're still taking it all in," she said.
"The family is just trying to support one another at this stage, that's all we can do.
"She was having a fantastic holiday. That's what makes it harder, she was having a good time on holiday and then this happens."
Gayleen McEwen reportedly owned a Blenheim motel.
