Motorcyclists set to converge

Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts will ride into Kaka Point this weekend for an event that has grown in popularity since its inception seven years ago.

The eighth annual Penguin motorcycle rally is expected to attract a large crowd from the lower South Island and beyond.

Organiser Peter Davey said it was hard to predict exactly how many people would arrive, but based on past years, it would be "well in the hundreds".

The main venue for the gathering is the Willsher Bay domain, the only venue in the coastal township capable of hosting such a large crowd.

Marquees will be erected and rally-goers can pitch their tents on the grounds, while others, looking for their creature comforts, tend to book out most of the nearby accommodation outlets.

Mr Davey and his team are spending the rest of this week camping at the site, preparing it for the influx of visitors, starting on Friday night.

Once the riders are all at the site on Saturday, they will take off on a tour or "run" of the district, with stops planned at various points before they all converge again at the domain for a social gathering that night.

Two live bands will perform at this event, with the first music starting about 5.30pm.

The Owaka Lions Club will serve food and refreshments during the night.

The rally is one of its major fund-raisers of the year, with proceeds going back into the community.
