The growth of community and local produce was cause for celebration in the Upper Clutha at the weekend.

The Wao Autumn Harvest Festival was held at the Luggate Memorial Hall and had workshops, a market and community potluck.

The annual Local Food Wānaka apple drive was also incorporated into the weekend.

Participants used local apples to make apple juice and chutney.

Wao programme manger Babu Blatt said food brought people together and the festival was a great opportunity to connect and educate.

"[It is to] celebrate the local bounty."

Workshops were on offer from a variety of local experts, including smoking fish, fermentation and seed saving.

"There’s no age [limit] to learn how to grow your food or process your food or how to cook.

"You’re bound to have some skills but you’re bound to always be able to learn more."

On Sunday there was a farmers market to "to showcase the amazing produce we have".

The festival also included a "long lunch" — a community potluck.

The lunch had been part of the festival in previous years, and tickets cost $55.

This year the decision had been made to make it more affordable — attendees needed to buy a ticket for $5 and bring a dish made from locally sourced ingredients.

This was a good chance to see what was growing locally and how others prepared food, Ms Blatt said.
