Ōwaka Museum is closing in on new cladding with a community trust boost.

The Museum and Catlins Information Centre is set to get a much-needed new roof thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Otago Community Trust.

The Catlins Historical Society, which owns and operates the visitor centre museum said the grant will be combined with other funding and local donations to complete the roofing project.

The work will ensure the facility can continue to protect valuable local history collections while also welcoming visitors to the Catlins.

The grant was one of 35 announced by the Otago Community Trust in August, totalling $563,582 across the region.

Community facilities and events featured strongly in the funding round with significant awards including $200,000 for the Cromwell Memorial Hall and Events Centre and $50,000 to Te Mana Ahua Ake Charitable Trust.

Otago Community Trust chair Alex Thom said the Trust was proud to support such a wide range of initiatives across Otago, from heritage preservation to sports, arts and community facilities.

For the Catlins, the $12,000 allocation represents an investment in both history and tourism.

The Ōwaka Museum is a central stop for visitors exploring the southern coast, and the new roof will help ensure it remains a reliable hub for years to come.

Since its creation from community banking in the late 1980s, the Trust now has $318.8million invested and has granted $230.6m into Otago.
