The two-vehicle crash was reported just before 5:40pm today, a police spokesperson said.
"One person died at the scene, two others sustained minor injuries."
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays."
State Highway 1 is closed at the intersection with Law Rd, the spokesperson said.
Detours are in place.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they sent three crews to the scene.
Hato Hone St John was also at the scene, the spokesman said.
