A range of Central Otago back country roads will close to motor vehicles after the long weekend, ahead of the winter season, the Central Otago District Council has advised.

In a statement the council said unsealed roads became vulnerable to serious damage when driven in icy, wet, or snowy conditions — creating safety hazards, cutting off community access, and driving up repair costs.

This year, five new roads had been added to the closure schedule following requests from the public.

Mount Buster Rd, starting 4.7km from Danseys Pass Rd to the Waitaki district boundary would close this year.

Little Kyeburn Road, starting 5.1km from Danseys Pass Rd to Mt Buster Rd; Serpentine Rd, from Linnburn Runs Rd to Lake Onslow Rd; Linnburn Runs Rd (Blackball), between Loganburn Ford Rd and Puketoi Runs Rd; and Long Valley Ridge Rd, from Old Dunstan Rd to Serpentine Rd would too.

Planning and infrastructure general manager Quinton Penniall said the programme had a proven track record.

‘‘This has proven to be an effective way of limiting damage that is costly and difficult to repair during the winter months,’’ he said.

‘‘We do encourage anyone wanting us to consider closing any other roads to reach out.’’

Farmers and residents that would be affected had been contacted directly and provided with access as needed.

Gates had been upgraded and signage would be in
place before the closure took effect.

Opening dates would depend on weather conditions with the potential to be extended, he said.
