Roxburgh resident Mary Varcoe took part in her first Central Super Masters Games yesterday at the super age of 101.

"This is my first time here but I'm really liking it," Mrs Varcoe said.

She has lived at the Teviot Valley Rest Rome since she was "100 and-a-half" and will celebrate her 102nd birthday in October this year.

"It's hard to believe I've had 101 birthdays," she said.

The super masters games have been held in Alexandra for 17 years and involves rest-home residents and senior citizens from all over Central Otago.

They compete in five activities, including a bean-bag toss, golf-putting and a basketball throw.

Co-ordinator Pam Love said 10 volunteers organised the event.

Sport Otago was the instigator 17 years ago, with the aim of encouraging senior members of the community to become more active, she said.

"It's a social occasion as well as a sporting event and many of the competitors are regulars who look forward to it every year," Mrs Love said.

Mrs Varcoe said she was told about the event on Thursday night and she was up bright and early yesterday and ready to go.

"I didn't want to miss out. The day's been very good - most entertaining."

The oldest two senior citizens association competitors were Hec Clare (95) and Phyllis Cochrane (94), both of Alexandra, while the oldest male rest-home competitor was Ren Kerse (89), of Ranui.
